Become a Lifeguard at Active Blackpool

If you’re interested working as a Lifeguard, you’ll need a Lifeguarding Qualification.

At Active Blackpool we deliver Royal Life Saving Society certified National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) courses throughout the year, so why not get your qualification with us.

What is the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification?

The RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the UK and Ireland’s most recognised and trusted lifeguard qualification.

More than 90,000 lifeguards currently hold the NPLQ, including all of the lifeguards who work at Active Blackpool.

During an NPLQ course, you’ll develop the essential skills and knowledge needed to become a qualified lifeguard, including:

  • Pool rescue techniques
  • Lifeguarding theory
  • First aid
  • CPR and emergency response

This is an intensive and rewarding course that combines both practical pool-based training and classroom learning. You’ll be challenged physically and mentally as you build the confidence and skills needed to keep people safe.

To successfully complete the qualification, full attendance is essential. You must attend every session, as missing any part of the course will mean you do not complete the required training hours and therefore cannot be entered for the final assessment.

What is the final assessment?

At the end of the course, you’ll complete an assessment designed to check your knowledge, understanding, and practical skills as a pool lifeguard. It gives you the opportunity to demonstrate what you’ve learned and show that you can apply those skills confidently in real-life situations.

To achieve the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), you must successfully pass all three parts of the assessment.

Practical Pool Assessment – You’ll demonstrate a range of pool rescue techniques and complete a timed rescue swim, showing that you can respond effectively and safely in emergency situations.

Theory Assessment – This is a multiple-choice exam covering the lifeguarding theory, procedures, and practical knowledge taught throughout the course. It tests your understanding of the key principles and responsibilities of being a lifeguard.

Practical First Aid & CPR Assessment – You’ll be assessed on your ability to deal with a variety of first aid scenarios and perform CPR correctly, demonstrating the skills needed to respond to medical emergencies with confidence.

Don’t worry – your training throughout the course will prepare you for each element of the assessment, giving you the knowledge and confidence to succeed.
