Here’s a bit more information about our Learn 2 Climb lessons.
To attend our structured National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) lessons, children must be aged between 7 and 17 years old. The lessons run for 50 weeks of the year with two weeks off for a Christmas break.
We also have adult lessons available on a pay and play basis for anyone aged 18 and over.
We offer two ways to pay NICAS for climbing lessons, the easiest being by Direct Debit.
A Direct Debit costs just £25.70 per month. The direct debit will continue as your child progresses through their stages so you don’t need to remember to make payments and your child’s place will be secure. The Direct Debit also has the added benefit of including free swimming for your child in any Active Blackpool family or casual swimming sessions.
You can also pay in advance block payments with 10 consecutive lessons costing £71.00. With this option we will send you email reminders when you have 3, 2 and 1 lessons remaining. As long as you top up before your child’s 10th lessons, they won’t lose their place.

For the NICAS scheme, if your child already has an Active Blackpool Leisure Card, you can book them on by calling the centres on 01253 478474.
If they don’t, then just pop in to any centre with proof of their age and we will get them set up and booked on.
If you’re not able to come in, then you can fill in the enquiry form at the bottom of this page and one of our team will get back to you.
For pay and play lessons, booking is easy on our Active Blackpool App, just chose Blackpool Sports Centre, select make a booking and choose the Instructor Led Climbing option. You can find all the available time slots there.
If it’s the first time you’ve used the app, you’ll need your Member ID and Pin which you can get from any of our receptions.
NICAS Lessons
NICAS is a standardised accreditation scheme for indoor climbing.
It aims to develop skills in a safe structured environment covering both roped climbing and bouldering to provide children with a solid foundation in climbing techniques and safety awareness.
The classes are structured in stages so children will work through the levels at their own pace as they gain skills and experience.
Their progress will be recorded in their individual log books, but we make it easy by updating your child’s progress to a digital platform which you can then view.
NICAS Levels
Level 1 New climber: Level 1 introduces beginners to roped climbing and bouldering and recognises their ability to climb safely under supervision.
Level 2 Foundation Climber: Aimed at promoting good practise in climbing and bouldering unsupervised on artificial walls
Level 3 Technical Climber: Focuses on developing technique and movement skills. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills to climb safely at any climbing facility and climb in a responsible manner.
Level 4 Lead Climber: Concentrating on the skills required to lead climb proficiently. Aimed at developing a self-motivated climber who has a wide range of skills and has reached a high level of competence, with a desire to progress by identifying and setting goals.
Kids Pay and Play Lessons
Junior pay & play instructor led sessions for children aged 7 and over are 30 minutes and cost £3.20.
The times are:
- Friday 7:00pm
- Friday 7:30pm
Our Little Monkeys instructor led sessions are for children aged 5 and 6. The sessions run on Saturdays from 10:00am to 11:00am
Adult Pay and Play Lessons
Adult pay and play instructor led sessions for for those aged 18 and over are 55 minutes and cost £9.20.
The times are:
- Wednesday 8:00pm
- Friday 8:00pm
We are able to offer 1:1 tuition for all abilities at flexible times to suit you.
