Get your cycling skills on track!

Beginner or enthusiast, saddle-up at our superb, purpose-built cycling track

Cycling boasts physical and mental health benefits and is a great way of widening your social circle.

Cycling can mean different things to different people. There’s the Lycra-clad warriors often imitated by middle-aged men of a weekend, daring mountain bikers, BMX bikers, there’s cycle speedway and track cycling. Of course, there’s commuters who cycle to work, bikes with baskets for going shopping and family-friendly hybrids providing parents and children with a great way to enjoy the great outdoors together.

Here at Active Blackpool, cycling is one of the many and varied activities we offer to help more people be more active more often. Our 1km purpose-built outdoor cycle track can be found at Palatine Leisure Centre in South Shore, Blackpool.  It’s a great place to get active on any sort of roadworthy bike, but also learn the skills to make you a proficient and safe cyclist.

Cycling is very much an inclusive sport or pastime, something that anyone can do regardless of their age, fitness, ability, disability and most health conditions. Our cycling track plays host to Wheels for All and adult cycling lessons, and it can used on a pay as you play basis or is part of our Health and Fitness membership package.

Wheels for All

The Wheels for All initiative is a nationally recognised programme that embraces all children and adults with disabilities and differing needs, engaging them in a quality cycling activity.

We have a huge range of specially adapted bikes to ride on. From two wheeled bikes to trikes and quads to wheelchair supporting bikes and hand-cycles, there is something fun for everyone to ride. We deliver public Wheels for All cycling sessions to many young people and adults all year round. They’re at Blackpool Sports Centre every Tuesday (1-2pm) and Thursday (10.30-11.30am) at a cost of £3 per rider.

Whether you want to keep fit, want to improve your balance, recovering from injury, want to meet new people or just enjoy cycling, we can cater for your needs. We also cater for private group bookings as one-off sessions, six-week blocks or all-year-round, which means you have the track to yourselves.

Adult cycling lessons

It’s as easy as riding a bike – but only if you know how to!

Active Blackpool’s friendly and qualified cycle instructors deliver 1-to-1 cycle training to adults aged 18-plus throughout the year. It’s a great way to learn and enhance your skills and confidence to cycle safely on the roads, making for a more enjoyable life on two wheels.

Our ‘Learn to Ride’ cycle training sessions have been designed to provide a practical training experience. They take place on the cycle track at Palatine Leisure Centre or on the athletics track at Blackpool Sports Centre. The days and times can vary due to the availability of instructors but more often than not, training is held on Sunday mornings.

Why go cycling?

Wheels for all

Firstly, it’s good for your physical and mental health. It combines exercise with being in the great outdoors. You can ride on your own, giving you time to think and/or chill out, or you can ride in a group, which is great for expanding your social circle.

It gets the blood pumping which improves heart health, creates endorphins – the body’s feelgood factor chemical – and can help to boost your immune system, thus protecting you from coughs and colds. Obviously, it’s good for the legs and cyclists have been shown to have healthy lungs too. It’s good for burning fat too.

So, what are you waiting for? Saddle-up at our superb, purpose-built cycling track and pedal towards your own cycling destination, whether it’s on two wheels, three, four or your wheelchair, cycling is for ALL!
