Everything you could possibly need to be more active more often!
The NHS recommends that adults should do some form of physical activity every day, but even if you don’t, exercising just once or twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease or a stroke.
The NHS recommendations say adults should aim to:
- Do activities that work all the major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms) at least twice a week.
- Do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity (brisk walking, riding a bike, pushing a lawnmower etc) a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity (running, swimming, walking up the stairs etc) each week.
- Spread exercise evenly over four to five days a week, or every day.
- Reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity.
Of course, how and when you exercise is a personal matter depending on several factors such as the time you have available, age, ability or disability, any health conditions, and what you are trying to achieve, among many others.
Here at Active Blackpool, we have the expertise and the equipment to support your journey to better physical and mental wellbeing (more about this last bit a little later).
Get the best for your health and wellbeing journey
If you want to get the best from the facilities we have to offer, then an inclusive membership is the one for you. It includes:

EGYM – this is unique to us in Blackpool and is the most advanced strength training equipment around. After your induction, you’ll just need to check in with your card or wristband and the machine will recognise you. It will automatically set itself to your unique configuration and remember the weights you’ve been working with. As you continue to use the equipment, more advanced features will open up to you with EGYM+, giving you more ways to personalise your workout.
Cardio equipment – whether you want to warm up and cool down, or really get your heart and lungs working, we’ve got the machines to do it. Adding in different equipment to your exercise routine will keep your workouts interesting and make you more likely to keep them up. A lot of our equipment is also connected to EGYM so can help you track and measure just how far you’ve come.
Free weights – using these can help you build strength power and co-ordination all in one go. From plate loaded machines to barbells and dumbbells, our gyms have a variety of kit to get your muscles working. And if you think it’s intimidating, our friendly instructors can help you understand how to use free weights in a way that works for you.
Functional equipment – another way to mix up your workouts is to use a variety of functional training equipment. Designed to work multiple muscle groups and challenge your body in different ways, this equipment can add another dimension to your programme. All our gyms have dedicated functional spaces.
Accessible equipment – all of our centres have a wide range of accessible equipment available. Our cardio equipment has touch screens to make navigation easy, but it also has manual adjustments available. Contrasting colours on all adjustment handles ensure they are easily identified. This is the case for both cardio and resistance machines. In addition to our standard kit, all sites have pieces of equipment which are specifically designed to be accessible for people with disabilities and differing needs.
For help and advice in using any equipment, please speak to one of our lovely instructors!
