Improving our exercise referral pathway
Improving Our Exercise Referral Pathway: Putting People First in Active Blackpool
At Active Blackpool, our mission is simple: to help people live healthier, more active lives, in ways that feel welcoming, supportive and achievable.
Over the past year, we’ve been working closely with Blackpool Researching Together (NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration), local health professionals and residents to take a closer look at our exercise referral pathway. This work explored what’s working well, what could be improved and how we can better support people on their journey into physical activity.
Listening to Lived Experience
Through a series of workshops and an NHS service evaluation, we heard directly from:
- people currently using the exercise referral scheme
- residents who had started but not completed the programme
- Active Blackpool staff and NHS professionals involved in referrals
Five key themes emerged that reflect the real exercise referral journey:
- navigating the system
- communication
- personalisation
- delivery
- and what happens next
Residents told us how important it is to feel guided, understood and supported, especially when living with long-term health conditions or low confidence around exercise.
What We’ve Learned
The feedback reinforced that physical activity is about much more than fitness alone. Participants valued:
- friendly and familiar staff
- being part of a likeminded group
- flexibility, including home-based or outdoor options
- regular check-ins to stay motivated
- social connection alongside physical activity
Health professionals highlighted the importance of clear referral processes, better communication and confidence in how the scheme supports patient outcomes.
Turning Insight Into Action
As a result, we’re already working on practical improvements, including:
- clearer information and simpler access to the scheme
- exploring digital support sessions to build confidence with technology
- developing community-led ambassador roles to celebrate achievements and encourage long-term involvement
- strengthening collaboration with NHS partners
- planning better “next steps” so support continues beyond the programme
These changes are designed to help people not just start being active, but stay active, connected and confident.
Supporting Healthier Communities in Blackpool
This work reflects our wider commitment to tackling health inequalities and creating inclusive opportunities for movement across Blackpool. By combining evidence, local insight and partnership working, Active Blackpool continues to put residents at the heart of everything we do.
We’d like to thank everyone who took part in this research and helped shape the future of our exercise referral pathway. Your experiences are helping us build a stronger, more supportive system for our community.
