Walking Cricket at Active Blackpool: Get Active, Have Fun and Meet New People
Want to get more active, but don’t fancy running, high-intensity exercise or spending hours in the gym?
Walking sports could be just what you’re looking for.
From walking football to walking cricket, walking versions of familiar sports offer a fun, friendly and more accessible way to get moving. They’re a great opportunity to improve your activity levels while learning new skills, meeting people and enjoying being part of a team.
And you certainly don’t need to think of yourself as “sporty” to take part.
At Active Blackpool, we’re passionate about helping people across Blackpool find enjoyable ways to move more. Walking cricket is a great example – combining gentle physical activity with the fun, skill and social side of one of the country’s best-loved sports.
What is Walking Cricket?
Walking cricket takes many of the things people love about cricket and adapts them to create a slower-paced, low-impact game.
There’s batting. There’s bowling. There’s fielding. There are runs to score and wickets to take.
The big difference? There’s no need to run.
That slower pace makes the game accessible to people with a wide range of abilities and fitness levels.
You might have played cricket for years. You might not have picked up a bat since school. You might never have played before.
That’s fine. Walking cricket is about getting involved, enjoying yourself and being active at a pace that works for you.
Move more – at your own pace
Exercise doesn’t have to leave you exhausted to be worthwhile.
During a game of walking cricket, you’re moving around the playing area, batting, bowling and fielding. All that movement adds up.
The lower-impact nature of walking sports can make them particularly appealing if you haven’t exercised for a while, are managing a long-term health condition or simply want a gentler way to become more active.
As you take part regularly, walking sports can help you work on your fitness, strength, endurance, agility, mobility and coordination.
And because you’re concentrating on where the ball is going rather than how many minutes you’ve been exercising, getting active can start to feel a lot more like having fun.
Never played cricket? That's OK too
Walking cricket isn’t just for former cricketers.
You don’t need to know all the rules, bring your own equipment or have any previous experience.
Complete beginners are always welcome.
The focus is on taking part, having fun and enjoying being active, so you can learn at your own pace while building new skills and confidence.
For many people, that’s exactly what makes walking cricket such a great way to get started with regular activity.
So instead of worrying about whether you’re fit enough, experienced enough or know enough about the game, simply come along, give it a try and discover just how enjoyable it can be.
Why Try Walking Cricket?
Good for Your Mind and Body
Walking cricket is a brilliant way to stay active while keeping your mind sharp. Every session gets you thinking, moving and reacting, helping to improve coordination, concentration and confidence.
Whether you’re learning new skills or sharpening old ones, there’s always something to keep you motivated and enjoying the game.
Meet New People and Have Fun
One of the biggest reasons people keep coming back is the friendly atmosphere. Walking cricket is a great way to meet new people, enjoy a laugh and feel part of a team.
From celebrating great shots to chatting between games, you’ll build friendships while staying active.
Fall Back in Love with Cricket
If you’ve played cricket before, walking cricket is the perfect way to get back on the pitch. Enjoy the buzz of batting, bowling and fielding in a relaxed, inclusive format that’s suitable for all abilities.
The pace may be gentler, but the excitement and team spirit are just as strong.
Boost Your Confidence Every Week
Trying something new can feel like a challenge, but walking cricket makes it easy to get started. As you build skills, get fitter and become part of the group, your confidence will grow with every session.
Before long, you’ll have a fun, active highlight in your week that you’ll look forward to.
Hear from our Walking Cricket participants
Of course, the best people to explain what Walking Cricket is really like are the people who already take part.
Our participants come to the sessions for different reasons. For some, it’s a chance to get active and improve their fitness in an enjoyable and accessible way. For others, it’s an opportunity to rediscover a sport they once loved, meet new people or simply enjoy having something social and active to look forward to each week.
Whatever brought them through the door for the first time, their experiences show that Walking Cricket is about much more than the game itself.

Why being active matters
Being active is one of the best things we can do for our physical and mental wellbeing.
UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that adults aim to build up to at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, alongside activities that help maintain strength on at least two days.
But there’s an equally important message: some activity is better than none.
The latest guidance highlights that some of the biggest health gains can come when people who are inactive simply start doing more. You don’t have to transform your lifestyle overnight – small increases in activity can make a difference.
Regular physical activity can improve sleep, help manage stress and support quality of life. Government guidance also reports that being physically active can reduce the chance of cardiovascular disease by up to 35%, type 2 diabetes by up to 40%, and falls and depression by up to 30%.
So finding something you enjoy, and are happy to keep coming back to, really matters.
